Do you like a good boom, or do you go for the silent and beautiful?

Another salute thread I see.....

None of the above. When making a color break shell, I aim for the break I want. The sound is what it is.

For reports, I don't do anything special to make them loud or not as loud. I do prefer a deeper tone as opposed to a sharp crack, but I do not go out of my way with exotic compositions or techniques to achieve it.

One of my favorite effects is photoflash stars. Don't know how to make them, but I sure do like them.

I like a loud crack with a deep bass aftershock, like lightening - I love a lightening storm. I play bass guitar, so more bass the better. :) You'd likely get the best "thud" from the mortar than the break above?.

Ground Salutes? Yes, I've made a few, but then again, too few to mention. I did, what I had to do, and saw it through, with some exceptions. To think, that I did all that, and may I say, not in a shy way - oh no, not me, I did it my way... but not good enough... yet.

If I was deaf, I could still appreciate a pyrotechnic display, but being able to hear the loud booms, is an aspect that I like. I like it very much.

Cheers.

Stix than you should try the bariumsulphate : mg (1:1) flash. Only bass no pitch.

I like to have a good strong sound that shows off the power of the shell, but not to be the main part.

A good example would be colorfull maltese/italian can shells, loud and strong camboom, but not annoying to the ears like the ones from flashpowder filled chinese cakes.

This would be a good example.

I use slow flash as a booster now. did a comparison between slow flash and black powder. first shell was comet to report out of slow flash the other shell

was 7x report out of bp and 10% dark al. made 3 inch salutes out of both and 4 inch salutes. the bp and al had a better report in all shells and inserts.

LOUD IS ALWAYS BETTER!

If I want quiet I'll read a book (or roll tubes). Not that I would put much effort into it except for salutes, but I can't really see the downside with a little bit noise. Noise good. Fire good. Me happy.

Well everyone sees a bang different. While i really like a good bang sometimes, i prefer it in the range of 10-20g. If i need more 50g. But thats really not often, maybe once a year. But what i can love hundreds of are small artistical used salutes, like spiralling reports or beraqs.

But i know thats not what most people want, but i also don't get anything from a salute shell or non timed reports.

Somewhere on youtube i saw a video of i thing it was WPAG, where some people used timed ground salutes for a salute display. That one was awesome, would have been happy to be there.

What did you say? .............I am a little hard of hearing these days. :-)

Big salutes take their toll over time......constant ringing in the ears is usually the final result from years of abuse.

No complaining later in life when it catches up with you.

Hearing protection is a good thing, you still feel the big salutes.

It's hard to beat the "thud" from a big mortar. That gut-puching deep THUD! It's not always practical or convenient with loud fireworks, but it sure feels good. I worked on a show where we used 4" salutes right between a church and the surrounding houses I was sure we were going to break windows. You could feel the reflected shock off the buildings. It was EXTREMELY impressive for a guy used to consumer fireworks and a few 5" round shells under his belt.

Salutes are an effect, just like any other. For my annual show, I include ground salutes, bottom shots, and single shot salutes. Start small, build up to the big ones at the end. My smallest salutes are just a couple of grams, my biggest are 4" cylinders, with 500g of TPA flash.
