SideGlance Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 I thought I would pass this news story on to everyone. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/07/tampa-bay-buccaneers-cj-wilson-lost-two-fingers-fireworks-accident I am guessing he got those black market firecrackers and well shit happens.. Reminding us all " if you did not make it.. Don't trust it ! "
mikeee Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Place on ground, light fuse, retreat to a safe distance from the fireworks. He might have missed reading the instructions like everyone else.
Shunt Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 It is so sad to see these news reports.I hope first the injured player recovers well and second that all the media coverage does not cause lawmakers to hinder our hobby even more. 1
SideGlance Posted July 9, 2015 Author Posted July 9, 2015 another one from the Giants wow New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter Pierre-Paul suffered injuries to both of his hands in an accident involving fireworks last weekend in South Florida, sources told ESPN on Sunday.
taiwanluthiers Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 hey I seen people throw bottle rockets too... they said they wanted it to go further... I said things could happen.
Richtee Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Ban this, ban that... they need to find a way to ban stupidity and morons. Typically, Nature will do that fairly well if left to Her own devices... 2
Sparx88 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 It amazes me that this kind of stuff still happens. With all the warnings and past accidents free for the learning intelligent people will still make the same mistakes. But before I end up with foot in mouth disease again I should say that even slightly "touched" people like myself are guilty of even dumber things.
deer Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) How unfortunate. Wish him fast recovery and hope he can continue to function well. Probably I'll get flamed over this, maybe it's worth introducing "pyro's license" for individual users. I think banning anything is stupid. Ensuring things happen correctly is much better, because this gives a solid path. Otherwise people who want something not inherently bad end up doing stupid things while trying to evade stupid bans. If there are mandatory licenses for activities as innocent as fishing and much more controlled processes, like driving, why not have a basic "fireworks firing license"? One that covers first aid, safe use, general operational principles of common fireworks and passing a test gives you a permit to buy and operate consumer things? Doesn't have to be anything sophisticated or well regulated. Just enough to make potential users understand that stick is essential to rocket (and not the part you firmly plant in ground or remove as needed), you cant just blow out burning fuse, there can be red hot dross from previous firing in mortar etc. Now-days it could even be set up as quick online course and test, that gives you readily usable and printable certificate. That might sound harsh, but IMHO is much better than outright bans or reckless mess, especially if it's just to educate and not to forbid anything. Edited July 10, 2015 by deer 1
ddewees Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Idiots will still buy illegal explosives and lose fingers... A licence won't solve anything.
marks265 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 A guy at work talked about lighting a festival shell. He lit the dang thing before he put it in the tube and never uncoiled the fuse.....he said he saw stars! WOW!
ddewees Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 I've met a lot of people who think you're supposed to light the shell then drop it in the mortar. Maybe a license would help...
ddewees Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 I remember the first time I lit a festival ball as a kid. I was sitting on the curb, and had it in between my legs. Lit it, then just sat there and waited to see what happened. I wasn't expecting the explosion from the lift to be so powerful. I stood up after that. 1
oldspark Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Maybe we need a course in how to drink alcohol, it is involved in a lot of homicides, suicides, rapes, wife beatings, car accidents, fireworks accidents, firearm accidents and the list goes on and on and on.
gregh Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 (edited) Is this something that would have been prevented with the training course?? http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/07/06/maine-man-dies-after-launching-fireworks-from-his-head/ You can't fix stupid. Edited July 11, 2015 by gregh
deer Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 ... You can't fix stupid. IMHO That's exactly what education is for. You cant fix certain mental illness, but severely ill people shouldn't be operating fireworks. With licensing you'd always have a friend or relative around who was able to complete the test and can direct the fun in safe manner. I bet the poor guy didn't even know there are mortars and rockets. Probably assumed all fireworks fly up by fire. Even if it didn’t explode, I bet he had no idea that he'd still get recoil with full force of flying shell, because the weightless paper tube has no inertia to absorb it. As for alcohol example, frankly, that's exactly what I think. Maybe not exactly a course, but a paper from your doctor that states you're fit to drink and allows you buy only certain limit of alcohol. Many people just cant handle alcohol - become extremely depressed, their digestion refuse it etc. That's why with this approach I believe people should be able to get any substance they desire, or find beneficial for them, if they are fit to.
ddewees Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Can tell you're from Europe... You want regulations on everything. ...license for fireworks, doctor's note for alcohol... What's next, permission to shit from your plumber? Good grief... 4

calebkessinger Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 I'm not very smart but .... I'm pretty sure there is a training system already in place.. most people seem to ignore it completely.. They call them PARENTS duh! .... When I instruct my kids to do something I MAKE sure they get the idea that screwing up could hurt and ALL actions have consequences. 2
oldspark Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Caleb LOL, I hear ya but who teaches the parents, this started a while back for what ever reason but you may have a point, some people should not be able to reproduce.
calebkessinger Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Nah... let em produce as many as they want.. gotta have some people to march at the front when going into war anyway! Common sense goes a long way. In today's cell phone and you-tube age you would think people would just go see how to do something. Oh wait, they are too busy taking a pic of their stupidity to actually google the directions! In all reality, driving around causes much more carnage.. I can name at least 10 people I knew that have died in their car... or, right outside of it.

taiwanluthiers Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 They tried restricting alcohol and all it did was drive it underground.
oldspark Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 They tried restricting alcohol and all it did was drive it underground.Yep so we continue to let it be a problem, not sure what that says about our society.
