Also for film can shells is 1/4" stars a bit to big? Thinking mouse turds?

Very nice, I would indeed use more and smaller stars for that size of shell.

Maybe go to 2" shells ?

I think your burst looks great! However, they would look better if they were a little lower. They're in the air for over 2 seconds, so if you cut that down to 1.5 seconds, I think you'll see a difference.

 

Also, a window screen is about 15 mesh, so that gives you (roughly) 4FA powder.

DaMounty, those are fantastic man. I don't know that you could improve them much. For that size, they are about perfect. I would say, try some colors now!

"Turbo Pyro" stars are probably C8 (Chrysanthemum 8) aka Shimizu Charcoal Fire Dust #2.

 

Nitrate 50

Charcoal 40

Sulfur 6

Dextrin 4

 

Or thereabouts.

 

1/4 inch stars are only too big for that canister because you can't get enough in. They don't burn very long. Try a bigger casing and 3/8 inch stars for a better effect. Also, try Tiger Tail for a slower burn - just change the Nitrate to Charcoal ratio from 50:40 to 45:45.

 

PS: nothing wrong with your BP for lift and burst!
