Blackthumb Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) For you beginners with limited funds....here is a test I did with a 1" tube salvaged from a "cake" from a shoot. Cut it to 6", made a spindle (4") from an aluminum rod, rounded the end...made a wood rammer from a dowell....1/2" of nozzle mix, reamed out to 3/8".....Shiny tooling is nice but you can get by making your own. To me, that's part of the fun of Pyro....experimenting.Don't over look all those empty 'cakes' from the fourth...people toss 'em out...I grab 'em and use the tubes....why not? rogeryermaw Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) that's what i did last year. they're great for a quick on the fly test of a comp when you don't have the time to roll new tubes and wait for drying time. it's a resource a lot of people overlook and average people will appreciate not having to get rid of them. some of the fountians i got last year had a small tube inside a much larger empty tube. they were perfect for 2.5" cylinder casings. they also contain pre punched disks that were suitable for end disks. schroedinger Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Also if you are into making cakes, pick up the pyromould type ones. They are easy to rework. Much faster and cleaner then using tubes. Also they are bottom fused, what is quite nice during work.
calebkessinger Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 NO FANCY TOOLS !!!! bah humbug !! woodysrocks.com when you are ready to just make pyro!!! I too made many a rocket with home made tooling, and most of them worked. I have a lot more luck now that I made some nice tooling ! Just make some rockets !! they are fun no matter what you use to make them.. heck some people just drill the fuel grain after pressing a solid core..... it works ! Be safe!
ddewees Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Quality tools will make any job more enjoyable, and repeatable. They are worth the investment.

mikeee Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Rocketier, Nice work on your collection of tools, I have some catching up to do. :-) Started working on a tube roller so I might as well have more rocket tool sizes to work with.
Blackthumb Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 I do have commercial and custom alum. tooling......I use a star rooler setup as my ball mill...find it easier to load/unload and works just as well....nice collection Roeketier!
