insutama Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Anyone know what type of wood Goex uses for there FFFF black powder ? Think if i made some good black powder using pine charcoal i could get the same burn rates as goex ffff ?
patsroom Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) To my understanding they use a mix of hardwood. Then what they do is blend their black powder from different batches and even when needed they will use different FF size of powder to perfect the constant quality of their powders. Mumbles Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 At one point they used maple. It's not hard to exceed their performance though.
FlaMtnBkr Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Just about any homemade charcoal will exceed the performance of GOEX when made in a decent ball mill. At least that's my experience and I've made and tested quite a few species of wood.

dagabu Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 the question though, is it hard to match their consistency. Dunno, my dad and brother in law have the same gun and bullet (they cast them together) and the batch of GOEX a few years back was very inconsistent from bottle to bottle. They ended up just mixing both together for consistency sake. Four years ago,the brother in law made a good size batch of BP with me, we pressed and corned it and he took all the FFg for his gun. Bottom line, just like he and I did, make a batch large enough to retain consistency over a period of time. Even the pros can have a bad batch (charcoal?).
