AlexPyro66 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Hi guys i have a problem with my charcoal.i cooked some pine cubes with the tlud method and i store them in my garage for 3-4 weeks.Today i desided to mill it.After 2 hours milling time i checked the jar and it had only some balls covered with a thick black liquid in the consistancy of bm paste. What is this and can i save the other wood that i havent milled it yet? Thanks in advance.
calebkessinger Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 sounds like it wasn't finished cooking.. leaving some moisture and sap in it. The tlud method works best with shavings or chips...animal bedding works great.. sometimes it needs to be dried cause they ship it wetter than they should.
Differential Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) That's pitch. It'll burn off with more heating, but I'm curious to see what it would do in gunpowder. Should be low moisture, mostly long chain hydrocarbons. Does it look like this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_(resin)#mediaviewer/File:University_of_Queensland_Pitch_drop_experiment-white_bg.jpg Edited January 27, 2015 by Differential
AlexPyro66 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Yes it does look exactly like that. There's any way to save the other charcoal ?
wildcherryxoxo Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Can you show us some pictures of your TLUD, and of your "charcoal"? I am curious how (if) you managed to extract pine tar, it has plenty of uses, not so many in pyro, however.
AlexPyro66 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 I don't have any pictures right now but if you really need them I can upload them tomorrow.Maybe I forgot to seal the container after the cooking is done this could be a problem ??
AlexPyro66 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 If i bake in the oven like cookies maybe i will save the charcoal
MrB Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I'd toss it out, and start over. As with most things pyro, there is a learning curve here.B!
AlexPyro66 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Yes i will toss it and i will try animal bedding what brand is the best? Now i am curious about the charcoal paste i will try to dry it and see the perfomance of bp
FlaMtnBkr Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 No brands better than another but the stuff from Wal-Mart and tractor supply seems popular. Just look on the bag and make sure it says eastern red cedar. A sniff check should verify. If you don't know what cedar smells like go look around laundry and cleaning supplies or where they have coat hangers. They sell little blocks of cedar that smell good and are supposed to run pests off like moths that you hang in the closet or put in your drawers.
Differential Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) Putting cedar blocks in your drawers sounds pretty uncomfortable. Edited January 28, 2015 by Differential 1
FlaMtnBkr Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Yeah, don't want any splinters in your bum. I was going to say something but figured I would let someone else go first. 1
Bobosan Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Yeah, don't want any splinters in your bum. I was going to say something but figured I would let someone else go first. Whole new meaning to having wood in your drawers.
