THEONE Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I have some mercury thermometers, and one of it, a small piece of mercury has stuck almost at the middle of the thermometer, and when i increase the temperature, this also small piece goes up with the rest of the liquid. Can i fix it and put again this small piece of mercury with the rest of it ?
rogeryermaw Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 depending on the temperature range of the thermometer you may be able to repair the mercury column by placing the bulb in acetone/dry ice slurry. i have had similar issues buying mercury thermometers that were stored on the side for too long.
THEONE Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 The temperature range is untill 110cI do not have dry ice!!
Mumbles Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Liquid nitrogen works too. What you need to do is to freeze all the mercury into the bottom bulb of the thermometer so that it all recombines. Otherwise, calibrate it so you know where everything should be and work with it. P.S. What kind of shit mercury thermometer only goes to 110C? Might as well just replace it with an alcohol thermometer.
pyroman2498 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 mumbles ,LOL XD . Why have a mercury thermometer when you can get a digital one for cheaper than a mercury one? ....
