Man I hope this doesn't sound stupid but I got a question. I was boiling a deer head to European mount. On the bottom of the pot a heavy carbon soot layer built up. I mean very heavy. The propane burner probably has some blockage in the air intake and needs to be cleaned out and I'll get to that before the next time I use it. So here's my question, can the soot be used as lampblack.

Best made from lamp oil, kerosene, or diesel oil...

If you can collect some of it, it should work. Lampblack is a messy beast as a fair warning.

No joke on being messy. I was able to scrape enough off to fill a small skylighter tub. Pretty cool and unexpected.

I've got a lampblack factory in my town. They use whatever carbon source is the cheapest at the moment they make it. When I asked them how they guarantee their oil-free lampblack is truly oil free; their answer was they take a spoonfull and stir it in a Dixie cup (small paper drinking cup) half full of water. If any of it floats, they keep roasting it till everything wets and none of it floats.

On testing, their oil-free lampblack is a superior product for most all pyrotechnic lampblack uses.

Edit: No, I didn't test it for conductivity.
