Sparx88
Just wanted to ask what these are. Are they whistle mix? Sodium salicylate and perc?
a_bab
Dark flash, a very sensitive composition, generally 50:50 potassium chlorate/antimony trisulfide. Can also be used to break crosettes.
schroedinger
Commonly dark report refers to a flash report like stated about, which has only a dimm light output and contains of a chlorate and sulphur/sulphide. But if you only wan't a report without the big white flash, you also can use a maron filled with whistle, bp, H3 or KP. These all will give you a report if you confine them god with much less lightoutput and no bright white flash. If you want to do so start with bp shots for safety reasons. Sparx88
I'm wanting to put some up soon and I like the way The Rocket Master does his with those 5 shot rockets with the last pop a good one. So ya, I want the noise without the flash, sort of almost hidden behind the bright colors. I have used bp in the past for these but they weren't actually made to be dark just wanted to stretch out the perc supply. Probably a noob question but what is a maron? edit; The idea of using that 50:50 for breaking crosettes may be something to try because 60% of the ones I have made this year just poof a little fart. I think having that little thin tip point for passfire on the rammer is important but does'nt always work. schroedinger
If you make crossettes it is essentially to have the pin for forming a tiny cavity on the end of the hole and!!! fill this cavity up with w fast burning fuse (right up to the enddisc so it can't leave the tiny hole). I often heard about thermalite being the best for this job, as i never had it, i just know that simple black match or paper fuse works is good. An alternative is to fill the cavity with ffg and just compress a little to lock the grains in place. A maron is simply a compartment of a can shell only used to give a report. Often a moron has no pasting over the string wrap. Also the term maron is often used if it contains just bp (but also with other powders). A maron can either refer to a kind of bottom shot or to a lift maron. A lift maron is what is traditionally used on maltese shells, where the passfire runs down from the top fuse /spolette into the maron. This way the lift burns inside the maron but no lifting work is done untill the maron ruptures. This allows the use of far more coarse powders and less powder for lifting. (Also it is essentially in the maltese lifting system using a wadding).

WonderBoy
MoronFTFY Sorry, couldn't help myself. It is called a maroon, not a maron. Otherwise, your explanation is basically correct. Sparx, what size shell are you making? I bet whistle would give a decent enough pop. Also, if you're pairing it with bright stars, you could look into using a TPA mix that is higher in TPA than Al, it is not as bright as standard flash. Sparx88
I'm building a couple cans and balls both 3". That link is great ty! In the can shells I'm attempting to have 5/8" crossettes line the wall with dark reports running spiral from bottom to top and fused progressively to have them run a circle evenly timed apart right after the crossetts break. It will be a first for me. Fingers crossed. I feel goofy for not realizing the pin hole was for a fuse. I thought about it before but was nah couldn't be lol.
