Sylar Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Slow white smoke comp: KNO3 ………………………………….60Sugar………… ……………………….40Candle wax……………………………….33 Procedure:Ballmill the KNO3 and sugar together untill flour consistency.Melt candle wax and stir in composition untill crumbly mass. Press into tube, but not that hard that the wax starts to come out. This mix was developed for use as a theatrical smoke, 50 grams pressed in a 25 mm ID tube makes a thick smoke trail that keeps going for about 1 minute. If more smoke is required, multiple units are lit at the same time. They can be lined up to light each other, and leave the tube filled with a glowing carbon matrix. They won't ignite from regular fuse in most cases, but sparklers do the job just fine. When regular fuse is to be used, press a "sure fire" mix on top. I would recommend something that leaves glowing embers, metal powders are in my opinion overkill.
Mumbles Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Have you considered melting the wax into some sort of hydrocarbon, similar to how is done with vaseline in whistle fuel? It would surely give a more intimate mix, and prevent anything from separating.
psyco_1322 Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Here, this parrifin smoker works well for me, especailly with crapy KNO3 thats makes things burn at about half there normal speed:http://frogfot.com/pyro.html#smok
Sylar Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Hey, I had no idea it was on frogfot's page ...It looks pretty much the same, a bit more sugar, a bit less candle wax. I just tested for burning speed (as low as possible with diffirent amounts of wax, starting from a basic well enough oxidised smoke mix. The candle wax will disperse properly among the mix when the powder is stirred in the liquid hot wax. No dry powder remains, and everything sticks nicely together! When you intend to use a solvent in the candle wax, you will also take into account the drying time and some drying shrinkage that comes with it! BTW: the parrafin smell can be mellowed out by adding a few drops of scented oil. I've used vanilla oil with succes, but I think allmost any scent can be used. Oil of wintergreen for the winter, and lavender for the spring/summer
Mumbles Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I wonder what happened to frogfot. I haven't seen him around in quite a while.
qwezxc12 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 ...allmost any scent can be used. Oil of wintergreen for the winter, and lavender for the spring/summer All right...scented smoke-bombs for the Ladies...http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/HPM/FM2060~Family-Guy-Quagmire-Posters.jpg
whitefox77 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I did a scented smoke bomb for my wife. She always complains about the smell when I set them off. Instead of using wax, I used sandalwood incense, worked great, and had a VERY strong sandalwood scent. Pull Ring or Pull String Ignition:I want to make my smoke bombs so I can set them off without using a lighter, and I don't really like the idea of just putting some matches in with a pull ring attached to the strike paper (the idea is to not have any "exposed" flame). Does anyone know how to make something like what is used in party poppers, where you just pull a string to set it off?
Mumbles Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Party popper ignition produces no flame at all however, and won't light the smoke bomb. It uses a friction sensitive high explosive BTW. I think you are going to be hardpressed to find something without exposed flame that is anywhere near economical. I'll have a look through Hardt and get back to you though.
ChainSmoker Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Yeah, be careful smelting the ingredients together. A half pound of the stuff ignited on me once (I wasn't wearing gloves), and I almost burned my hand off. I escaped with pea-sized second-degree burns and a few holes in my shirt.
ChainSmoker Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Oh yeah, by the way, be careful where you set up your camp stove. A retired "enforcement" officer was walking by the house and asked me what I was doing...thought I was making meth.
BLAST420 Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 well these are some interesting post I read through the first couple way back, and noticed some comments on electric stoves, camp stoves, burners all sorts of what not its only KNO3 and sugar folks I was meltin this shit together at the age of 12 on my gas stove at home. Just have to be careful VERY VERY VERY low heat and continually stir as soon as you have consistency and a unified substance kill the heat and pour into a pop can with the top cut off and throw some matchsticks in it heads up (or wick but I am not sure......hot!!! shoulkd be fine) ;D
psyco_1322 Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Lol thats funny. I think about the same thing. I cant see how you can manage to screw up smoke bombs. Common sence people, its all you need....and fuse. <Which is fine to stick into hot smoke mix btw, but it will sink it so let it set and cool a bit so its kinda thickened.
