fight fire with fire Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 I just made a huge smoke bomb (loo roll filled with KNO3 and sugar). I just melted together 240g of KNO3 and 160g of sugar in a saucepan then poured it into a loo roll. It was drie after about 30 mins then covered it in that licky selotape (the tape you lick). I lit it with a blow torch. It gave off loads off smoke and a 6 inch red flame then the pressure built up so much it blew the bottom of the smoke bomb out and it lifted to about a foot then went out after about 1minute. Sorry i didn't get a vid but i'll make another tommorrow and post it.
pudidotdk Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 That sounds cool. I once melted kno3 and sugar with water, to recrystallize it like james jawn does. I accidently overcooked it, didn't turn brown it was still golden/white, although it was hard to shape, normally when you use that method its like playdoh. The size was a bit smaller than a golfball. I put a few layers of masking tape around it, perhaps 2, and i lit it. It was so fastburning that it exploded , I really didn't expect that. Just another good example on things that not always does as you expect.
fight fire with fire Posted February 19, 2007 Author Posted February 19, 2007 I can't use reccrystallization method cause i don't have a oven in my workshop, but i was pretty pleased with what i did a few minutes agoe.
pudidotdk Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 An oven is not needed you can make electric skillet which i did when i made the exploding smokebomb. It is simply adding water to the mixture, then cook until the water is gone, and you scrape the remaining with a spatula. Do not cook to long, and you'll get what I got. I've also tried the oven method, although I used a toaster oven, I think it's quite hard to get it right.
leosedf Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Very nice!Check out my 2KG smoke effect (almost the same as yours) melted and poured on a sheet of paper and then rolled.Caution need to be taked because the mix is VERY HOT, i was wearing insulated welding leather gloves.Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mViI83njRnIImage: http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/4711/img0090fi1.jpg It has covered the house (was windy) over 400 square meters.I'm planning to construct a 4KG device but i have to figure out what to use to (pour) hold it out. Maybe one 3 inch paper mortar i have.
fight fire with fire Posted February 19, 2007 Author Posted February 19, 2007 Wow... 4KG ... mine was 400 grams. Anyway nice smoker good job. I also make small ones 10-20g then wrapp it in tin foil, then heat up with a blow torch and the smoke bomb will go off. The smoke will come out of tiny hole made by the blow torch and it will give a lot of thick smoke very quickly.   Henry
fight fire with fire Posted February 19, 2007 Author Posted February 19, 2007 Yeah that mixture is hot, when i was making mine my dad was holding the smoke bomb and i accidently poured some on his hand , but he enjoyed smoke bomb.
asilentbob Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Have you ever melted it with some filler to make it so that it can be broken up like pressed BP? Granulated KnSu/something could possibly work as a weak lift. Then again charcoal and sulfur should be really easy to find.
fight fire with fire Posted February 20, 2007 Author Posted February 20, 2007 No just KNO3 and sugar. I just made another one and i'll set it off later so i'll post it today or tomorrow.
leosedf Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 I think it's better NOT to granulate this comp, afterall that's why you melt it in the first place.Just melt and pour in a tube.
Newbergpyro Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 It's fun too see these little buggers buzz around and freak out when you wrap them in aluminum foil with a fuse!!
fight fire with fire Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 I've taken a video of one yesterday it didn't blow up but my computer won't except the video sorry .
h0lx Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 be extremely careful, while melting tho, it is extremely dangerous, especially amounts like 400g or 2kg. I am pretty sure all of you weren't a part of this board yetm when this thread was a good lesson to all of us, so I link it here:http://www.xsorbit2.com/users/apcforum/ind...5072086&start=0
leosedf Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 That's why i never use open fire or candles etc.Always a hotplate with the minimum temp to melt the sugar first and then remove the heat (sugar stays hot for very long) then i add KNO3 at small portions (all at once would instantly freeze the mix) and mix it well. Sometimes you may need to reheat the mixture on the plate for for a small time and with a low temp.I have mixed large ammounts and never experienced a problem. My 4KG version is waiting...
fight fire with fire Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 I made a few small batches and topped the smoke bomb up bit by bit because i was scared doing one huge batch. I find that the best method of cleaning the saucepan out is to light it with a blow torch.
fight fire with fire Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 By the way my avatar is a picture off the smoke bomb while burning, it was a bit more like a very smokey fountain.
pudidotdk Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 To me it looks more like a man with a gun
h0lx Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 the best way to clean the melting equipment is to fill it with warm water and letting it stay, if you are in a hurry you can boil it too.
leosedf Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 True! Just water will do the job even if you let is stay for a while.I just noticed that many accidents have been made because of open fires used and because somebody left to take a drink or so.Do not EVER let it boil alone and never use high temperatures, there is no other way to do it except electric plates.
fight fire with fire Posted February 22, 2007 Author Posted February 22, 2007 A an with a gun? eh. its a smoke bomb!
pudidotdk Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 When I wrote my post it was a man sitting with a gun
mormanman Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 if u add some baking soda and/or baking powder it lights it up a whole lot faster and burns alot hotter the flames gets like a foot in the air its pretty sweet sry if i wasted ur time im new here
Mumbles Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 You don't actually want flames. Flames decrease the smoke. You might want to try putting a choke on your smoke devices to decrease the oxygen getting in and increasing the smoke.
fight fire with fire Posted March 21, 2007 Author Posted March 21, 2007 I like having flames on my smoke bomb it looks pretty nice.
cplmac Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 400 grams seems like an awful lot of comp! 260 grams of KNO3 is more than half a pound!
