teknix Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Ugh! I was afraid of that. But I guess I could get around that by "top fuzing" the shell and have the quick match ignite the time fuze on the shell before it gets to the lift at the bottom. Or maybe I can mix some meal powder with the NC to help with ignition?
Boomer Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 OMFG the video, how much lift was in those mortars? I better dont think about what will happen if one gets stuck.... OTOH I would not mind 50g HE from those 2' distance, if those 2' are solid concrete and my ears are plugged.
justanotherpyro Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 That is a superb looking shell al. You should write up a tutorial for shells in the tutorial section.
Kilo_G Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Al, excellent shell. I demand a video of it. The rising shell effect is gonna be sick, especially with the timing. Are you using actual BP (pressed, corned and so on) made at home or are you using a rough powder for lift?
al93535 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Update on my shell, here are pics of it almost finished. It just needs a leader and lift cup. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/al9...6inchrising.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/al9...inchrising1.jpg Kilo: I am using homemade lift powder. Willow based, pressed and corned, then sized to -6 +12 mesh.
Kilo_G Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 What are you doing to burnish them like that? You are going to get a video of this thing when you light it right?
al93535 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Burnish them like that? What do you mean? And Absolutely there will be video! Finished pics: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/al9...6inchfinish.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/al9...inchfinish1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/al9...inchfinish2.jpg Total shell weight: 1550 grams Lift: -6 +12 mesh, 103 grams.
optimus Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Burnish: 1. To make smooth or glossy by or as if by rubbing; polish.2. To rub with a tool that serves especially to smooth or polish. A smooth glossy finish or appearance; luster.
Givat Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 al93535, Amazing shell! Do you have maybe more pictures of the assembly? I will be very intrested to see them. And the BP for lift is home made?

Givat Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I alerady saw the pictures, I asked if he had more now after the shell is ready. But didn't see he wrote on his BP, my mistake.
Sason.net Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 wow, thats is a really one good looking shell!very impressing I cant wait to see it! what stars have you puted there?
BigBang Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 OMFG that is beautiful! That shell is going to kick some serious arse when you launch it. And 3 rising shells attached! You, sir, have out done yourself. But wait, its a freaking double petal! Well, since you've been asking about 6" shels for a few months, I'm glad the product is such a masterpiece. And to sason, he said what the stars are on the previous page.
bubbelpower Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 http://img108.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bild0110cm.jpg A picture of the fireworks i made for my brothers birthday today. There are some shells, starmines and two fountains. It looks really lovely, I think.
justanotherpyro Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 I have fixed the issue of using easter eggs for shells. Less lift, looser in the mortar, gluing the seams, and using the thin but really strong flashing tape makes them work great. Really quiet and a nice little shell. Also, how many of you use visco for your smaller shells timefuse? I have found that taping it and using a shorter length ( 1/2" for 2" shells, and 3/4 " for 3" shells ) has fixed any timing issue I ever had. Most sites recommend using around an inch or so, which threw off the timing for me and was a big problem when a shell would fall back to earth and explode.
artificier Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 yeah nice paper shell ! well done this is my small plastic shell with no lift charge : http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/5396/myshell1vw.jpg Here is a firework anatomy made by me : http://img430.imageshack.us/img430/9926/sanstitre3br.png
Draco_Aster Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Now its time for a 48"! Make sure NOTHING happens to that shell - Dont put it on desksDont walk around with it....etc. BE PARANOID!!!!
Pretty green flame Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 That's big, wonder how much BP they use to lift it.
Frozentech Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 That's big, wonder how much BP they use to lift it.From the web site of the company that builds them : Only 2 per year are made. The weight is 450 kg.It reaches an altitude of 850m and produces a fire flower of 800m in diameter. The size of the lift charge and it's cost are company secrets. They also note they are fired in special festivals, and dedicated to a God. ( I don't know which... is that animist or Shintoist ? ) Biggest shell in the world this page also has pics of the break. I would LOVE to see this monster fired ... from a couple kilometers away. Think they handfire ? Muahahahaha ! Takes the kamikaze spirit to do that.
Mumbles Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I think they use 16 or 17 pounds for the lift. I read this somewhere. Using the 1 ounce per pound and .5 ounces for everything above 10 gives a value of around 30 pounds

Using the 1 ounce per pound and .5 ounces for everything above 10 gives a value of around 30 pounds hmm...that seems very little for a ~900pound shell. They seem to use around 15kg for a 30incher. I know from mythbuster that they used 5kg to launch buster (90kg) out of a drain pipe. Mephistos Minion Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Hey artificier, that shell, what is the casing there? Some sort of commercially availiable one? It looks like it would be good to use for a barrage of small shells. What is is fused with?
Kilo_G Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I believe that the shell in his hand is a plastic shell casing from Spain. If it is, they're very high quality plastic shells, buy em if you see em.
