Thanks chaps. Not sure what happened with one of the "sky mines", my thought is that hot gas/flame got into the first one. Fired a few more bits that night, including my first can shell and a working 1 lb'er (at last!)

Heres the can shell....3" Farfalla. As it broke, I knew I should have boosted it!

BTW the burning insert tubes were promptly put out!

3" round shell with Win20 to green stars.

the break powder was BP on buffed rice + 3 gram magnalium flash bug.

the break is symmetrical but almost half the shells stars didn't caught fire.

I think I'll try to use about 3gr flash powder free in the shell other than the 3gr flash bug.

any more ideas how to make sure all stars will catch fire next time?

Givat, it doesn't look like t he shell is broken too hard. I find it a bit odd that the majority of the stars which didn't light were on one half the shell. It's probably nothing, but still curious. It looks like you might just need to increase your priming a bit.

Between what has been said here and on passfire, it might be the tube you used to pass fire into the shell. Typically the paper tube, sometimes called nosing, is either pasted or tied on to the spolette. If it was not secured, it could have prematurely broken the shell by starting a fire in only one half. It would make sense based on what the shell looked like. You may want to try that on your next shell. Even if it doesn't fix the problem, it is typically good practice.

Made another 3" shell today. this time I know I used poor primed stars...but, it looked ok in the sky.

lower left quadrant blew blind, maybe better pasting technique is needed to keep the shell from blowing apart to soon, the master "S" speaks about people using wrong booster in relation to shell size weight, like H3 needing more resistance to expand properly,! Just a thought! All

  • 3 weeks later...

allrocket, the problem was the prime. I made some new batches of stars and they worked great making round break. (you can see some shells here:

)

Now I want to build my first 5" round shell. Do you guys use the same BP for break charge as you use for lift? (for my 3" shell I used slower BP and I thought maybe as I go bigger I should use slower BP, maybe even bought-charcoal BP?)

Firstly, there were some very nice shells and mines there. Was that a pure BP burst?

I DO usually use the same speed BP for lift and burst.

While some people do use slower powder in larger shells, really, five inch shells don't count as large shells. Certainly the effect can be impressive, but I would not start using a slower burst until 8", 10" and 12", and even then, I've always used hot BP.

If Hot BP is causing problems, it's probably that you are not making/priming your stars properly, or that you are making some 24" shells.

A few shells I fired during pyro meeting this month.

I think that kamuro stars in shells 2 and 5 could burn a few seconds longer… I used only 12mm round stars, next time I plan to try 15mm pumped, hope will be better.

Hope you'll like it and I'll be grateful for any improvement suggestions.

Cheers

Great Shells Tse-Tse!

Would you mind sharing the formula you used for the long hang-time glitter stars in the shell that breaks at app. 0:41 ??

Thanks in advance
