R candy grain size / core diameters

When casting a cored r candy motor, is there a basic formula to determine core diameter. I believe core should be 1/3rd of the I/D of the grain / motor? Correct? So if I was to cast my regular weekend blazer ( simple 400mm X 45mm nozzle-less ) I can figure out core diameter no problem, but is the a maximum allowable limit to how far into the motor, ie how close to the head to drive my coring rod?
